Beginnings
– How I view my practice at the start of my current training –
This practitioner has not chosen to share this information at this time.
I enjoy working together with children and challenge and develop myself and therefore creating innovative opportunities to extend the children's learning by following their interest.
I am a Headteacher,& Interim Manager since January 2023. I have been studying and working at the same nursery for the last 19 years.
My practice is mostly child-centred by listening to the children and valueing their voice. For example, we have a weekly planning and extend the children learning the following week by looking at their interest. However we do follow a set list of topics during the year, therefore there is opportunities to be more child led.
At our Nursery we have a freeflow between inside and outside. There is teacher led and child initiated activities, children can choose independently where and what to play with, choosing mostly from open ended resources. We follow a routine of the day and children will have snack, lunch and group time altogether. We use open ended resources such as block play, clay, sewing. However we do have some preformed toys and it is still a discussion if we should keep them
Children participate mostly through verbal and non verbal communication and us teachers making observation of the children's interest, and plan during the weekly planning meeting and extend their interest the following week.
Through observing the children we will adapt the environment to support their interest and learning.
However, the topics we chose throughout the year are mostly adult led.
The majority of children at our setting have English as their second or third language. We value their culture and background by asking the parents to come in and share with us their knowledge about their country or share their festivals. Furthermore, at the entrance, we have the flags from the different country the children come from.
What I hope to learn and strengthen in my practice, by taking this course is how I lead and support my colleagues at the Nursery using the Froebel principles.
Team work, working together to create a great environment for children to extend their learning by using the Froebelian approach.
Be creative and support, develop, and extend my learning.
