Beginnings
– How I view my practice at the start of my current training –

During my four years of primary teaching (specialising in Early Years) I realised that I could leave impressions of kindness, nurture and support on the children in my care. This is in fact a real privilege of the job. I also love seeing the wonder in their little eyes when they are interested in something.
I feel my role is a facilitator of play and exploration so that the children in my care can learn about the world around them.
I feel it is most child centred through the differentiation that I do on a daily basis - I try to ensure each day that the needs of all of the children in my class are met.
Also through IDL and topic work as most of the learning we do is based on what the children's interests are. They very much lead the learning.
Environment - Children give opinions on and influence the physical environment. Individual requirements are taken into account and changes are made if the children think something would work better. I also aim to create a nurturing environment where every child is treated with care and respect.
Materials - Children share opinions and influence resources that are used within the class (there are obvious limitations here).
Procedures - The day to day procedures are mostly influenced by timetabling and break and lunch times.
Sharing opinions as a class.
Check ins to see if the space in the classroom works for them.
I have realised my childhood was very Froebelian based with play, relationships and nurture being at the centre of everything. These experiences have had a deep and meaningful impact on the teacher that I am today. Froebelian practice and who I am as an educator are intertwined which has enhanced my pedagogy.
I think that social justice influences my practice to an extent as I try and ensure that the children in my class are aware of peoples different situations but I feel this could be incorporated into my practice on a more regular basis.
I hope to be able to create a more Froebelian environment within my classroom setting.
Freedom with guidance from a knowledgeable educator and learning through self reflection.
