Beginnings
– How I view my practice at the start of my current training –

I have worked in early years for 24 years and I still find it very rewarding. I find it amazing how children are becoming more confident in exploring their natural environment indoors and outdoors and that they are taking more responsibility in planning their own learning. I love how they challenge the minds of the adult in their questioning and curiosity about the world around them.
As a team leader I feel that I have adopted a more clerical role with less time for development work with the children. In attending courses and widening my understanding, I try to combat this by passing on what I have learned and sharing great ideas with my colleagues.
When I am working in partnership with the children and allowing them to take charge of their learning. Encouraging them to explore their learning environment in a free but safe manner and being there to support them and extend learning.
Children are encouraged to explore their learning environment and make their own choices in their learning. Children's interests and needs are monitored through observations and this allows staff to offer experiences that are suitable for individuals. Children are encouraged to self evaluate learning and think about next steps.
Our early years setting aims to involve children in all aspects of nursery life. Encouraging children to risk assess and take charge of their own learning. We provide a period of time where children have time to explore and develop their learning without interruptions.
Children have access to outdoor play everyday and they have recently been introduced to our new veggie patch. Staff are developing areas such as block play, loose parts, songs and rhymes, outdoor play and cooking. Through this we are trying to encourage children to succeed and find the answers for themselves. Adult direction is there but only when required.
Awareness of social justice encourages determination to offer the children and families in my area the same opportunities that others have. It inspires me to promote children's rights to be respected and their voices to be heard within their community and the wider world.
To gain more knowledge and confidence in involving children in the decisions we make in the nursery. Giving them more ownership of their day to day opportunities .
Openness to change, kindness, patience and not trying to do too many tasks in a short space of time.
